Another article that originally appeared on The Atlasphere. It is inadequate to say that it is depressing to hear of children in horrendous situations. The one ray of hope that we, and they, have is self-determination. A person’s past does not have to determine their future, and I have faith that these children will find the strength to overcome the situations that befell them through no fault of their own.

Twice in one week. A family in Lavonia, Georgia, (on the South Carolina-Georgia border) and one in Jackson, Alabama. Horrific stories of abuse and imprisonment of two families – one with four children, the other with eight.

Increasingly, stories are cropping up about people who had gastric bypass surgery and other stomach changing surgeries (like lap bands) who have put most or all their lost weight back on. Some of these people are in quite visibly in the public eye like the “Today Show”‘s Al Roker and Star Jones, formerly of “The View” and truTV. Recently, Oprah Winfrey gave $365,000 to the Ron Clark Academy, apparently out of the blue. Granted Clark, Disney 2000 American Teacher of the Year winner and currently the founder and head of the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, is previous guest of her show and received an award from her in the past. I came upon this article today, and usually I am happy to see Oprah succeed and win accolades. She is a strong woman who truly rose up from the ashes. However, the fact that she was named the most powerful female entertainer this year due to her possibly influencing one million people to vote for Barack Obama worries me.
