It seems like so many famous people are dying- entertainers, athletes, businessmen. On top of that we all have dealt with family or friends who are ill or have passed. Why does it feel like so many people we know are suffering? Blame it on facebook. Myspace. Twitter.
Social networking has put us in touch with people we had otherwise lost contact with; and those people in turn have found long lost friends. This creates a large pool of people that we have some connection to who will go through both good and bad times.
As such, along with good news about graduations, marriages, and births, we are suddenly inundated by a lot more bad news than we are used to. While cancer rates have actually dropped in the US, we all know multiple people currently fighting or recovering from cancer or who have died from the disease. And we all know someone whose mom or dad has died from one cause or another. We all know someone who has gone to war or lost a job or has been robbed.
It’s hard to keep this in perspective, but these bad things happen in even the healthiest societies- what’s new is having to know about so many of them at once. Rather than being overwhelmed by the sadness of these misfortunes, we should rejoice in the knowledge that we are in the thoughts and prayers of many more people than we would have been before. And in turn we can keep those who are suffering our thoughts and prayers.
