Laura Ling, Euna Lee, US journalists doing a story on North Korean women fleeing into North China, were captured by North Korean border guards three months ago. After a 5 day kangaroo trial, they have been sentenced to 12 years in a labor camp. On May 28, I briefly mentioned Ling and Lee in my article “Obama Making US Less Safe?” since it had been quite some time anyone heard about what had become of them. Why did this get so far? With former Vice President Al Gore as their boss (he heads up Current TV, the media venture sponsoring Ling and Lee), and the obvious seriousness of American citizens being thrown into a Communist prison for dubious reasons, this should have already been resolved, some way, somehow.
There is talk of the pair being used as bargaining chips now that N. Korea is keen on expaning their missle program, featuring missiles which point to us and our allies. This is a tragedy in the making, and shame on the current administration for not coming to the aide of these young women sooner. Will Ling and Lee be sacrificed for the sake of world security?
