American David Gabriel “Gabe” Watson, the man accused of letting his wife of 11 days die by A) not attempting to retrieve her when she had problems scuba diving on their Australian honeymoon or B) intentionally harming her under water, has pleaded guilty. However, he will only serve ONE year for the murder. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter.
Manslaughter? One year? What prosecutor in their right mind would offer that? First, though his wife died in 2003,Watson only turned himself in a month ago to a court in Brisbane, Australia to answer the murder charge against him. Secondly, the grieving widower remarried without resolving what happened to his first wife. Third, there is at least circumstantial evidence (and maybe more substantial facts that we will never hear) that this may have been premeditated.
Today’s Australian judicial system is living up to its forerunner- the mock courts held when the country was a penal colony, where erroneous sentences were the rule of the day. Or is that Australia doesn’t want to spend the time or money to bring an American murderer to justice? I guess it’s just not their problem….
