Father Albert Cutie has renounced his Catholic faith, after a scandal that had tongues wagging in the Spanish-speaking world. The handsome Catholic priest, whom some refer to as “Father Oprah” for his numerous TV appearances dispensing spiritual advice, was caught embracing and kissing his girlfriend, Ruhama Buni Canellis, on the beach. His vow of celibacy clearly broken, Fr. Cutie (pronounced KOO-tee-ay) has decided to become ordained as an Episcopalian priest.
The Catholic Online website, covering the story here, seems more upset that Cutie did not consult his bishop before making the move, than over the courtship of his girlfriend. To expect celibacy from young men is preposterous and the Catholic Church (which I have great respect for) would do well to allow its priests to marry and go about their business privately within the sanctum of marriage, so that sex scandals can stop materializing and tearing down the usually respectable facade of the Church.
